  • Mission statement

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) is a charity aiming to transform healthcare for a sustainable future. CSH is supporting the NHS to become leaner and greener with projects that benefit the environment and people’s wellbeing. CSH's work benefits both people's health and the environment, via key projects:

    * The NHS Forest Project enables health staff, patients and local people to access green spaces at NHS sites. Since 2009, the NHS Forest has planted 10,000 trees at more than 30 sites. The project has has been praised in the government’s recent public health white paper as well as winning a Green Apple Award. It also acts as a platform for spreading the word about greener healthcare via its individual community-based projects through hosting community events and involving members from hard to reach groups, such as elderly people and school children.

This exciting national project has also won the support of many key NHS staff, who value the project’s contribution to providing a ‘natural health service’ for their patients, engaging staff in a positive greening scheme and linking with local communities.

    * The Clinical Transformation Programme works with clinical specialties to create networks of green champions sharing ideas to save resources, cut carbon emissions and pioneer better healthcare. CSH started this work in kidney care and have 85% of NHS kidney units signed up to our renal network. We want to spread this model to other specialties in 2013.
