Commonwealth Housing Trust

The objects are to relieve people in need by providing financial and material assistance for housing projects, with particular emphasis on rehousing slum-dwellers through their self-help groups.

Founded 2004

  • Mission statement

To assist a self-help group registered in Kenya to purchase a virgin site on which to build new houses for present slum-dwellers in Korogocho, Nairobi. A 2-acre site has been purchased and has a secure title. The initial work is to provide the basic services. There will then be a managed self-help scheme for the building of 26 houses - one for each family member of the group. The immediate target is to raise £50,000 for the services and the first group of 4 houses; when that has been implemented we will move on to the next group of 4, and then progressively.

  • Aims

    Commonwealth Housing Trust aims to:

    • To assist registered self-help groups with a proven track record to provide for themselves decent housing on virgin sites with basic services, located in sustainable locations, well away from slums.
