  • Mission statement

Tower Hamlets Street Pastors (THSP) is a community response to urban problems. Volunteers from local churches, working with the police and local council, patrol the streets of our area at night in places where the nightlife is at its most 'edgy'. We endeavour to care for, listen to and help all those we meet. We give flipflops to young ladies too drunk to walk in their high heels, we give out warm hats, gloves and thermal blankets to those sleeping rough, we work to diffuse tense or confrontational situations, we pass on information about local help agencies, we direct those who are lost or disoriented to safety and we give out water to rehydrate those who may be under the influence of drugs. Our work is not an excuse for preaching but a down-to-earth meeting of the needs we encounter on the streets. Although we are affiliated with the national SP organisation, we are autonomously constituted and run, with our own constitution, policies, bank account and management committee.

The situations we regularly find ourselves in are:
    • spending time with people the streets at night, often those struggling with issues of alcoholism, drug addiction, homelessness, family problems – we encounter many ex-offenders and ex-servicemen as well as young runaways who are ‘sleeping rough’
    • signposting people to appropriate help agencies
    • getting people something to eat
    • seeing the lost, drunk or distressed safely on their way
    • quietly diffusing potentially aggressive situations
