Upendo Children's Home

Upendo Children's Home aims to provide a loving, self-sustainable home and the best possible start in life for orphaned children in the Mwanza region of Tanzania.

Founded 2010

  • Mission statement

According to our constitution, Upendo aims to “relieve poverty, sickness and distress and to advance education, in particular but not exclusively of orphans, primarily through the establishment of a children’s home in Buswelu village, Mwanza, Tanzania”.

The ethos of our project is to provide a hand-up and not a hand-out. We use the benefits of education and skills obtained in the UK and work closely with the local community in Buswelu to enhance the lives of our children and other families from the area. When Upendo is complete, we will be able to provide a loving, sustainable and stable home for children orphaned by the global HIV/AIDS pandemic; giving them the best possible start in life through education and training.

It is important to us that Upendo remains rooted within the local community (Buswelu, Tanzania), and that local people work with Upendo for the benefit of our children. In return, Upendo endeavours to enhance the lives of the residents of Buswelu through our community development and integration programme.

Equally important to us is that Upendo should be as self-sustainable as is possible. Ensuring this through green projects such as rain-water harvesting and solar-power generation, we can ensure Upendo is able to exist within the local Buswelu community, without being entirely dependant on external funding. Upendo's farm & agriculture programme, as well as ensuring a reliable food supply, will also provide valuable additional education for our children.

  • Aims

    Upendo Children's Home aims to:

    • To relieve poverty, sickness and distress and to advance education, in particular but not exclusively of orphans in Buswelu and the wider Mwanza region of Tanzania.
    • To ensure we work towards this aim by working closely with the local community of Buswelu- engaging them wherever appropriate in community development and integration projects.
    • To work towards a high level of self-sustainability, through green projects which seek to maximise our natural resources.
    • To work in the UK and in Tanzania to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and of the plight facing so many vulnerable children.
    • To give a hand-up and not a hand out: sharing the benefits of education and training received in the UK.
