Young People and Children First

We support Foster Care Leavers as they transition from being teenagers to being independent adults.
We help to prevent Young Care Leavers and other disadvantaged children and young people in West Berkshire being homeless and living on the streets.

We ensure they have all the right building blocks in place to go confidently and positively into adult life so they can reach their potential, not hindered by their troubled start.

  • Mission statement

The aim of our Charity is to help prevent Young Care Leavers and other Disadvantaged Children and Young People in West Berkshire being homeless and living on the streets.
We help support these Young People by giving them a place to stay, our charity house ‘Cornerstone’ provides a safe and stable environment for them to live in. We work with each young person to identify a personal development programme that provides them with opportunities and activities they may have missed out on, which will build hope, self-esteem and ambition as well as new skills. The aim is to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
While in the house, they have as much independence as possible coupled with the right balance of emotional and practical help from the Charity’s workers and volunteers. We help them to return to education (if needed), volunteer within the community, find work and eventually live independently.
We currently have 60,000 children in care, 70% are in foster care, 14% residential homes, 3% live independently, 4% adopted and 9% remain with parents. 28% of these children have special educational needs and only 14% will get 5 good GCSE’s (65% average).
It's not fair that these young people should continue to suffer. This is why we offer the house and personal development programme we do. Here, they can live in a stable, supportive environment and gain the skills they need to go on and lead happy, healthy and successful independent adult lives.
