The Ipswich Disabled Advice Bureau

We are a local, independent charity working to support people with any form of disability, their carers, families and others in related fields, who live in Ipswich and surrounding area.

Founded 1973

  • Mission statement

Over the past 44 years we have provided free and confidential advice, information, advocacy and services to individuals with disabilities, their carers, families and other agencies working with them. We aim to provide advice and information to organisations and agencies serving people with disabilities. In addition we work to improve statutory services, educate public opinion and co-operate with similar bodies.

In an average month we deal with 750 enquiries and cases. Currently, we employ five part time staff and have eleven volunteers. All our volunteers and most of our staff have disabilities themselves. Our Trustees either have disabilities themselves or are carers.

The support we offer covers a range of categories including benefit checks for tax credits, housing benefit and council tax, assistance with completing forms e. G. Disabled Living Allowance, advice on employment issues, special educational needs, representation at appeals, applications for blue badges, signposting for community care assessments, personalisation plans and direct payments and trusted tradesmen.

We provide a home visiting service for clients who cannot get to our town centre office and, for over a decade we have provided a mental health outreach clinic in partnership with VoiceAbility (formerly East Suffolk Advocacy Network (ESAN). Manual wheelchairs are available from us for short term hire and we are setting up a dyslexia screening service.

  • Aims

The Ipswich Disabled Advice Bureau aims to:

    • Our workload is increasing and cases are getting more complex, so we would like to be able to increase paid staff hours (currently 2.9FTE), which in turn would enable us to recruit more volunteers.
