The Magdalena Consort gives chamber performances of baroque vocal music using the forces for which the music was originally written. It also offers private performances in hospices, free of charge.
The Magdalena Consort, founded in 2008 by baritone Peter Harvey, is acclaimed for its virtuoso chamber performances of sacred vocal music from Monteverdi to Bach.
The group's bold commitment to using the forces for which these works were originally written guarantees an exhilarating concert. Peter Harvey and his small group of high- calibre soloist colleagues sing choral movements and arias alike - performing Bach cantatas, for instance, with one voice per part - supported by players from the top period instrument orchestras. The energy and intelligence of the Magdalena Consort's interpretations have delighted audiences across Europe.
As well as giving public concerts the Magdalena Consort offers private performances in hospices, as part of an initiative which it calls 'Musical Offerings', giving people whose medical condition makes it difficult for them to attend concerts the chance to enjoy first class, expressive music-making in an informal setting. Hospices are charged nothing for these performances.
Magdalena Consort aims to:
- provide those cared for by hospices with informal private performances. Hearing live music of high quality greatly benefits people whose medical condition prevents them attending a concert.
- educate the public about classical vocal music. In its concerts and recordings the group puts into practice the conclusions of academic research, making them accessible to the general public;
- benefit the general public through the staging of musical performances. The energy and intelligence of the Magdalena Consort's interpretations have delighted audiences across Europe;
