Charity information

The Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation

The Foundation also trades as Sir Stanley Matthews Coaching and aims to provide "more young people with more access to more sports"

Founded 2000

  • Mission statement

We provide more young people with more access to more sports.
We concentrate on coaching and training coaches through our Sir Stanley Matthews Coaching Scheme. We include parents, coaches and future coaches who have an interest in any sports.
Our coaches qualify through sports associations including the training of coaches for disabled children. We have coaches covering football, cricket, athletics, rugby, tennis and rowing and we are keen to attract coaches from other sporting disciplines.
Any youngster under the age of 21 can apply to the Foundation for a coaching grant.
We are also involved in funding a number of group coaching schemes at various establishments, again maintaining Sir Stan’s principles of creating and sustaining opportunities for young people to enjoy partaking in sport and achieving through that. His sense of fair play, discipline on the field and accepting decisions are important aspects to emphasise. These help to make our recipients total individuals who are respected and accepted in all walks of life.
We help Stoke on Trent College to send student to South Africa to help coach in disadvantaged schools just like Sir Stan did from the 1950s until the end of his life in 2000. This helps develop both the UK students, teachers and pupils in deprived areas.
Training coaches enables us to reach many more youngsters and prepare them for life through sport.
