Westcountry Rivers Trust

The Westcountry Rivers Trust brings rivers to live from source to sea for the benefit of all. We do this by reconnecting people with their river, balancing land use to improve water quality and quantity and protecting freshwater habitats and species. We are a dynamic team with a 'can do' attitude who deliver real change in our world using equal measures of science and common sense. Every penny we raise goes on improving the rivers that are dear to the people who live and work in the Westcounty.

Founded 1994

  • Mission statement

The Westcountry Rivers Trust is an environmental charity (Charity No: 1045806) established in 1995 to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of the rivers, streams, watercourses and water impoundments in the Westcountry and to advance the education of the public in the management of water.

A cornerstone of our philosophy is working in partnership with external individuals and organisations to share expertise and facilitate better information transfer. By collaborating with a whole range of stakeholders - ranging from individual businesses through to academic institutions, NGOs and government departments - the Trust aims to circumvent sectoral interests and encourages joint solutions to the complex environmental problems our society currently faces.

  • Aims

    Westcountry Rivers Trust aims to:

    • Engaging People - We reconnect people with their rivers. If you can't see or use your river you don't value it and if you don't value it you don't protect it
    • Balancing Land-use - We work with landowners to balance land use so it improves water flows. Landowners need support to help provide us with benefits such as food, water and flood protection
    • Protecting Rivers - We restore rivers so they can support a diverse range of habitats and species. Our society values our iconic species such as Otter, Salmon and Kingfishers so we must protect them
