  • Mission statement

The objects of Friends of BCH are to relieve sickness and to promote and protect good health among children living in Belarus and countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union by supporting the Belarusian Children's Hospice (BCH) and the children's palliative care movement in the aforementioned countries.
BCH was the first children's hospice and palliative centre in the former Soviet Union and since it was founded in 1994 has helped to establish seven smaller children's hospices in other towns in Belarus. BCH is the leader in children's palliative care in Eastern Europe and former Soviet countries and it is increasingly being asked to advise organisations on establishing children's hospices these countries. BCH trains palliative care workers and is lobbying to change Belarusian law to formally recognise and support hospice and palliative care in Belarus.
BCH, based in Minsk the capital of Belarus, cares for children and young adults with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses mainly through its Hospice at Home programme. Parents of sick children are taught to care for their children in their own home surrounded by their family and support is available for the whole family. There is a small in-patient unit for respite care and end of life care. Each family cared for by BCH has a doctor, nurse, health visitor and psychologist assigned to them and all services and medication are provided free of charge. BCH is planning a new purpose-built hospice.
