Advice on Individual Rights in Europe (AIRE) Centre

The last decades have seen a surge in awareness that rights are protected at European level, but many people are still denied the benefit of the rights that have been agreed and accepted by states. The AIRE Centre is a legal charity founded in 1993 to assist individuals to enjoy in practice the rights they have in theory under European law. We do this by promoting awareness of rights which are not well known or understood and by providing legal assistance on the relevant aspects of European law, including the European Convention on Human Rights, the European Social Charter, the European Convention Against Trafficking, but particularly the European Union legislation governing the rights of individuals. We work with all groups, with a focus on the special needs of the vulnerable and marginalised who cannot afford expert legal advice, families, ethnic minorities, LGBT people, and foreign prisoners.

Many of our clients benefit from assistance from lawyers and advice workers experienced in handling problems of national law. Our role is to assist in those situations by providing specialised advice on European law. Some individuals have no legal representation or advisors and need us to assist them in taking their complaints to the European Court of Human Rights or in otherwise asserting their rights under European law. We deliver the service that is appropriate to each client.

With a view to enhancing the familiarity of public officials who administer the law and NGOs who provide complementary assistance to individuals and groups, we also provide training. We regularly train judges, public officials and lawyers in the UK and other Western European countries, but have a particular focus on assisting new democracies and new EU member states in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union through training designed to foster respect for human rights and the rule of law.
